Twenty years. Twenty records. More than 4,000 shows. American Aquarium is still out here proving that a band can last without going viral, without a major-label machine, and without sanding the honesty off the songs.

Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2006 by frontman and songwriter BJ Barham, the band took its name from a Wilco lyric and its work ethic from the van. What started as a college-dorm project became one of the most durable acts in modern Americana: grit-and-melody rock & roll with pedal steel, three-part muscle, and songs that sound like somebody actually lived them. Barham writes the catalog—addiction and recovery, Southern identity, small-town America coming apart, marriage, fatherhood, grief, and the stubborn decision to keep showing up.

The turning point was 2012’s Burn. Flicker. Die., produced by Jason Isbell and meant to be a last record. It wasn’t. It was the one that made people listen. Since then American Aquarium has headlined the Ryman, played Red Rocks, launched its own festival (Roadtrip to Raleigh), and kept releasing records on its own terms—first through New West, now independently on Barham’s Losing Side Records. Later landmarks include Things Change, the Shooter Jennings–produced Lamentations and The Fear of Standing Still, and 2026’s New Ways to Lose: a driving, cinematic rock record about loss, resilience, and the strange math of staying in the fight.

They own their publishing. They drop albums when they’re ready. And the promise has never changed: American Aquarium will come through your town, kick the doors off the place for ninety minutes, and leave you with songs that still work at 3 a.m.
